How Reiki Helps Your Healing

Katie Bellamy, LCPC, Dance/Movement Therapist, Reiki Master/Teacher

Whether you’ve never heard of Reiki before, have a vague idea of what it is, or have received it regularly, are you aware of the ways it can support you?

What is Reiki?

Reiki is the Japanese art of energy healing. Reiki only helps and never harms as it is Divine, Universal energy. We all have access to Reiki energy, whether we are trained in Reiki or not. When someone is trained in Reiki, they are tuned into this access and learn ways to channel Reiki energy for healing.

Should I try Reiki?

I am a firm believer that you already know what you need for your own healing, however sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. If you’re feeling curious or called to try Reiki, it is definitely worth the try.

As a therapist, one of my favorite things about Reiki is that it takes you very little work. You need to do mental and emotional work to navigate therapy. You need to put in physical effort to improve your physical wellness. You need to learn and unlearn to expand as a human. With Reiki, you can show up, quiet your mind, and trust that your energy and Spirit are doing the work.

While you’ll ideally experience a quieting of mind and body as well, Reiki is effective and working even if you spend the session thinking about lunch.

If you’ve been feeling “off,” physically, mentally, emotionally, or energetically, Reiki may be a supportive practice to reset, rebalance, and re-energize.

You can do Reiki virtually?

Yes! When weighing whether to set up a Reiki session in-person or virtually, there are really pros and different pros, no cons. Additionally, Reiki practitioners are trained to use distance Reiki to heal across time and space so virtual sessions really aren’t all that “far” for Reiki to reach.

In-person Reiki Positives

  • Getting out of your space and into a space that’s been energetically cleared can be helpful.

  • Physical touch in itself is healing so feeling a practitioner’s hands and presence may be positive.

  • You may feel more confident in assessing your intuition when gathering energetic cues and clues in-person.

Virtual Reiki Positives

  • You don’t have to leave your space so it may be more accessible.

  • You can receive the Reiki and your space can be included in the session, potentially helping you integrate.

  • Because the connection is not through touch, you and/or the practitioner may be find more psychic information available.

Can I be Trained in Reiki?

Yes, anyone can learn Reiki! If you’re feeling curious or called to learn Reiki, beginning by receiving a session may be a helpful first step.

When learning Reiki, you first learn Reiki to apply to yourself, animals, objects, and spaces. Once you feel comfortable with that practice, you then move onto further training to provide Reiki to others and/or to teach it.

So, even if you don’t feel called to learn Reiki to practice it professionally or provide it to others, learning Reiki 1 for self-practice can be a wonderful self-care tool.

I’ve seen Reiki support folks who have previously struggled with mindfulness or meditation or who are highly sensitive and need support in developing energetic boundaries.

Reiki is also a wonderful practice for therapists and other helping professions as it’s another tool for self-care, regulation, boundary-setting, and space clearing.

How Reiki Helps

We all have experienced feeling physcially, emotionally, mentally, or energetically drained, imbalanced, or overwhelmed. Reiki supports be rebalancing these systems, clearing stagnant or negative energy, and re-energizing with Source energy.

Similar to how physical movement can release tension and leave us more energized, how emotionally venting can release emotional tension and enliven hope, how mentally refocusing can reset negative mental tension and re-orient us to the positive, Reiki is a spiritual and energetic way to offer the same.

Reading this may provide some intellectual understanding, but ultimately to fully experience if and how Reiki helps, experiencing it for yourself is the route to understanding.
