What is Sport & Mental Performance Coaching?

For a long time, mental performance coaching was synonymous with ‘mental toughness.’

Professionals are now recognizing that there is so much more to mental performance than being ‘mentally strong.’

Mental performance coaching now looks at the more nuanced mental health issues and commonalities that individuals within a competitive setting experience.

Sport and mental performance coaching is a resource utilized to work with individuals who are having difficulty within several areas that include, but are not limited to:

Confidence, coachability, adaptability, anxiety, teamwork, and athletic identity.

This type of coaching is utilized to inquire about areas of struggle and provide collaborative ways to increase mental well-being in order to achieve performance goals.

Sport and mental performance coaching isn’t limited to athletics.

Mental performance skills are widely applicable to other populations like artists, musicians, and outcome-dependent workplaces.

Our Approach

Our approach is to help athletes/performers understand how their mind influences performance and how to apply mental strategies to help confidence and skillfulness during high pressure situations.

We also see clients as individuals who have their own needs and do not believe in the ‘one size fits all’ framework.

Our approach is to help find your barriers, develop strategies to overcome them, and sustain change through mindfulness and application.

Sport & Mental Performance Coaching is different from therapy and regular coaching.

While traditional coaching is directive and focuses on output, sport and mental performance coaching focuses on input.

We look to see what performance challenges an individual is facing and then work to provide preventative and in-the-moment coping skills that can be utilized for years to come.

Sport and mental performance coaching is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any mental health condition.

Although there are many overlaps between mental performance and evidenced-based therapy, mental performance skills coaching does not focus on symptom etiology and other underlying factors that might be contributing to mental distress.
